My name is Doug Braden and I teach Grade 6, 7 & 8 Aboriginal Studies and Outdoor Ed at HBOIERC. I started teaching in Norway House in 2004 as the Business Education Teacher. From 2006 to 2010, I was the High School Career Guidance Counselor. I left Norway House in 2010 and returned home to Norway House in 2018.
My family has long-standing history with Norway House. I was born at the local hospital in Norway House. My parents met in Norway House in 1959. My father, Keith Braden, worked for the Hudson Bay at the Fort. My mother, May MacNair, was a day school teacher at Rossville School. My ancestors on my mother's side, traveled through Norway House on their way to Red River (Winnipeg) in 1813 and 1815. They returned to Norway House (Jack River) a couple of winters as they were chased out of Red River as their farms and homes were burnt by the Northwest Company. They would return to Red River in the spring to start over again. One of my aunties married Donald Ross, who was the Chief Factor at Norway House. They raised 11 children during their 25+ years here in the 1830's, 1840's and 1850's. The family scattered across western Canada and the Territories working for the Hudson Bay Company. One of the children, Roderick Ross, returned to Norway House as Chief Factor in the 1870's. Rossville is named after Donald Ross. Ross Island is named after Roderick Ross. I have four children, Scott, Cole, Keon and Saige. Keon graduated from HBOIERC in 2008 and is an agronimist, and Saige attended grades 2 and 3 while she lived here and now attends the University of Manitoba. Cole is the Operations Manager for the RM of MacDonald, is married and has three children. Scott is an Air Traffic Controller in La Ronge, SK. |
